Veiled Beauty Khimaar & Abaya

As Salaamu 'Alaykum my noble readers,

The Muslimah’s covering is a core part of her worship and identity. There is a sea of choices that a women can wear to be properly covered. Sometimes these choices can be overwhelming because you never really know which garments fit your lifestyle.

Due to this, I seen fit to begin the “Veiled Beauty Series.” This will give women the pros and cons of each garment plus how to wear it and the lifestyle that it is suitable for.

We started the series off with the Jilbaab and you can read all about it by clicking here. Today we will discuss the two piece option both known as the khimaar & abaya or the Hijaab & abaya. The style choice is endless for abayas and khimaars. I will list a few examples of each below.

Abaya Styles:

A-line, umbrella, butterfly, bisht, can come with pockets, zippers and buttons, kimono, and many more.

Khimaar/Hijaab Styles:

shayla, cape, one piece with head tie, two piece with under cap, one piece with sleeves, Hijaab with niQaab attached, Hijaab with layers and many more.

Pros:

• Comes as two pieces. (This can be a pro for some and a con for others.)

• Variety of colors

• Various choice of materials

• Can purchase styles to fit nearly any lifestyle.

• Can be very comfortable depending the material and fit.

Cons:

• Since these are two pieces, you have to “match” the khimaar/hijaab with the abaya unlike a ready made garment that’s already put together as an outfit.

• This isn’t a “one size fit all” type of style so you must purchase correct sizing for the abaya in comparison to some garments that are one size.

• There’s so many styles and choices it can become overwhelming which can result in wasting time and money searching.

***Please note that you cannot wear an abaya without a khimaar. An abaya is intended to cover your body not the head.

Lifestyle:

These garments are very practical and can be worn in many situations. Maternity, most jobs, physical activities, travel, school, and recreation.
